As in Kari's bloodline there are several rescue dogs (one of them made second during the worldchampionship 2005), we had fun to test his aptitudes. Magali went to hide under a cover partially covered with snow, not far from the house, and Kari immediately found her.
We then complicated things a little ! Magali is dissimulated in the cellar of an old ruin, deep in the forest, to two or three kms of our house. There still Kari found the trace, crossed the river, follow-up the track till the ruin, excavated in the heap of old stones to find his beloved !!!
We don't have no sheep nor bovines, but horses, so Kari's herding instinct was revealed with them. He runs to go to seek them when they are out of sight. We learned him how to approach them from face or profile, but never behind to avoid any accident. They are together everyday, so they enjoy each others. Kari naturally watches them, in the pature or during a trail, without asking to. A few months later, we had an opportunity to test Kari on sheep.
We have no access to an agility ground, so we had fun to test Kari on a health and sport park : the result is very interesting : he never says "no" !....
Finally we found a real agility ground and could carry out our tests on true obstacles.
We tested this new discipline came from the USA and just recognized by the FCI.
Kari is always OK, on the ground, in the water, it's the same !
Let's have fun !! (To be consumed with moderation, on soft ground and after a good heating, with sporting dog only ! ).
Whatever his leader wants, he is OK....Yes! He jumped alone on the column, with no help!! And, even if he jumped over the blue net the first time, the next he walked along....
We have a lot of wild animals here, and this year, lots of wild boars have been wounded but not totally killed during hunting parties, and gone in the wild... Then, we thought of using Kari' s sharpened sense of smell to help the hunters, to put an end, as soon as possible, to the condemned to die wild animal's sufferings.
On the photos, you can see Kari during his training with a track traced with wild boar blood. The end of the track was first a bottle full of blood ( the first tree photos),then a boar leg . You can see how proud Kari is: he has done his job and his leader is satisfied !!! Finally we were called in real situation. On the last photograph, you can see that Kari is a little unquiet in front of the beast he found at the end of the track, finally in the night and after a long research in the wild.
Magali, tells us the story : " A few days ago, in the deep silence of our montain's night, a farmer heard the crash between a car and roe-deer: the poor animal claimed his suffering....The following day, this man called Philippe and Kari to ask them to try to find the undoubtedly seriously wounded animal. The trace was already 18 hours old, and there were no blood, only hair, it was not easy for a dog...Have a look on the photos: you can see that Kari left the road and started to cross fields and then woods, his nose close to the ground. He runned threw brambles, houx , undergrowth and water, it became very hard to follow him..A long time later, Kari suddenly stopped ans barked: the poor deer layed down, his hindquarters broken, inable to run away...In a hurry, I called the man and he decided to shorten all this suffering....
On May 22, 2010, Kari and Philippe presented themselves to a national examination, organised by U.N.U.C.R ( National Union for Senthounds), and S.C.C (Canine central Company), and leading to the official title of "senthound".It's a very difficult test during which the dog must prove reliable on an old artificial track (24 hours old) traced in full nature (interferences with wild animals) with 25 cl of wild boar blood for a lengh of 1 km 200, with 3 right angles...He is followed in his research by 3 judges of the SCC and the person who traced the track.Afterall, the dog is officilly declared able to research wounded animals, so to complete their sufferings. We are particulary proud of our sheepdog, who carried out the test without failing, amound hunt dogs especially selected fot this activity, and from which some were eliminated!
Photos and comments, by Magali :
Before the test: It is 7:30, baldly slept, raised early, the tension grows up. Drawing lot for the attribution of the track. Those in the morning were cut by wild animals during the night, these inthe afternoon are done under heat...Kari's track, around 9 AM,is difficult becausefull of fresh odors from the night (passages of roe-deers).The track should be kept! Difficult for the driver to concentrate with all these people who follow him, difficult also to move in full nature without the small reassuring ribbons: Philippe needs "read" his dog partner, and espacially trust him. the tracer is there to attest accuracy of the track followed by Kari. The judges don't like to run: the driver have to moderate his dog withoutcutting his motivation, and also to leave the largest lenght of rope( 10 meters).Kari spend 23 minutes to achieve his mission, whereas some other dogs needed one hour and quarter! Our Kari became the first kelpie "senthound"from europe, and undoubtedly of the world, what a pride!
We would like to specify that in any case we ask our Kelpie to track an healthy animal, but only on a wounded and lost one, condemned to die with lots of sufferings. Our dog is held with a 10 meters line, so he can not be wounded. Once the poor animal found, our task is achieved, the hunter puts an end to the boar 's sufferings.
The bloodhound isn't a predator or a killer, (like some huntingdogs are), but a dog with a very sharpened sense of smell, tenacity and concentration, he does not let divert by fresher tracks or funnier activities… Kari has this particular sense of smell and good willing to work.
Isn't Kari an all-around dog, able to all the disciplines ?
